When I was about 30 years old (way too young to be having any health problems at all) I woke up one morning with a pain in my right side that was so bad, I had to roll out of bed. I was certain I had a kidney stone. Fortunately, it was just a kidney infection. That's when the doctor said to me that if it were a kidney stone, I would have been in a lot more pain. I shuddered the thought.

The truth is, kidney stones are extremely painful, as anybody who has suffered through this ailment can tell you. Oddly, most people have no idea what causes kidney stones and what can be done to treat them, outside of conventional medicine and its harmful drugs and procedures.

So what exactly causes kidney stones? Kidney stones are caused by an unusually large collection of mineral salts. Ironically, these large deposits are formed from an actually deficiency in these minerals, usually calcium and magnesium. The minerals come from the bones in your body. However, aside from mineral deficiencies, there are other causes of kidney stones. Refined sugar is a major contributor to the formation of kidney stones. The reason this happens is because the sugar accumulates in the pancreas and causes additional insulin to be produced. This in turn causes the kidneys to produce more calcium in the urine.

How do you know if you have a kidney stone? Well, outside of going to get an ultrasound, the only way to even suspect that you have a kidney stone is by the symptoms. In most cases, kidney stones are characterized by pain in the upper back all the way down to the lower abdomen. Usually there will be blood in the urine. You may even suffer from nausea and vomiting. Occasionally, you will have fever and chills.

If the stone is not too large, it will usually pass. Sometimes though, surgery is required in the case of very large stones. Outside of surgery, kidney stones are usually treated with a diuretic such as Thiazide. There are other medications as well. All have their risks.

Fortunately, there are natural treatments for kidney stones so that you don't have to take dangerous medications. At our website you will find some excellent resources. In the meantime, these few simple tips will greatly relieve your suffering.

Drink plenty of water. Drink at least 2 or 3 quarts a day.

Drink corn-silk tea. This will increase your urine output, which is important for purifying the kidneys.

Drink cranberry juice. This will help dissolve the acid in the urine, which is a cause of kidney stones.

Reduce your salt intake and don't drink soft drinks or any drinks with caffeine. Also avoid all foods with caffeine, such as chocolate.

You don't have to suffer with kidney stones and take dangerous drugs or undergo surgery to have them removed.
