From Corruption to Christ in Cambodia

I was a corrupt official. A powerful leader in my community, I used my authority to threaten people. When there was a problem between the people of the village, it was my job to solve their dispute. But instead of using justice, I took lots of bribes. The villagers criticized me because I did a lot of scandalous things.

As a result of my pride, I lost things like love, compassion, and moral living. All the members of my family, from my children to my wife, never got good care, or love or encouragement from me. Instead, they only got beatings and teardrops. My wife always cried, especially when I was drunk. I was a drunkard.

I did not believe in Jesus Christ. I believed in the evil spirit, the Satan spirit, so I had a big altar to Satan in my house. I always spent time to worship the Satan spirit, day or night.

One day four people came to my house with my two brothers, who introduced me to them. One by one they shared about their background and past life. One of them used to be a robber, another person used to be a doctor, another one was a businessman and the last man was a former drunkard.

In one hand they each held booklets and in the other hand they held traditional musical instruments of the Khmer people, the minority culture of me and my village. I thought that they were going to play for somebodys wedding. So I asked them, Which village are you going to play this music? One of the men said, We are coming to play here in this village because we had the vision to bring the good news of salvation to the people in this whole village. Then they asked, Would you please allow all of us to stay here for one night? Yes, I replied, you can stay in my house tonight.

After all of us had conversation for about an hour, I wondered about the booklets they were carrying. Why is the title of this book Who is God? I asked. I learned that it was a Bible study book. Then one of the men shared the Scriptures with my whole family and me until I really understood about the true God. He began to lead us in Khmer traditional music and to pray and worship the Lord Jesus. Some other villagers even came and took part in that worship.

The next morning, my family and I, ten of us in all, gave our lives to Christ as our personal Savior.

Now my entire family has peace and light from the Lord. My wife stopped crying. Instead she has a smiling face and rejoices in the Lord. God has given my whole family new lives in Jesus Christ. Through studying His Word, I have found that His promises have given me confidence and a strong faith in Jesus because our God is the living God that is full of love and compassion.

My house now has more visitors than ever. We are gathering not for drinking wine, but for the good things that God wants us to do.

From now on I am going to have a part in His ministry for reaching the lost souls for Christ. I will especially try my best to bring the salvation of hope and love from the Lord Jesus to give to the people in my whole village, so that they too can have new lives in Christ, and they too can be witnesses for Jesus in the world.

I thank God that He sent His witnesses into my house that night. It was the night that my whole family left the darkness of the world to get a new life in Christ. Thank the Lord. Amen.
