Horror Movie Reviews - The Messengers And More.

Here is my take on a new bunch of horror movies.

The Messengers

The Pang brothers (they did the Asian horror movie "The Eye") have made an American movie. The troubled Solomon family moves out to a creepy sunflower farm in the country to start a new life. Soon ghosts threaten the family.
I was a bit disappointed with this movie, I had such high hopes. The script was okay, and the mood was creepy, but the CGI just wasn't scary.

Shutter

A photographer runs over a girl with his car by accident - and later discovers ghostly images in his pictures. This horror movie from Thailand doesn't have an original bone in its body (we've seen everything before in other Asian horror movies) but the execution is flawless. The atmosphere and special effects are good. And most importantly; it's scary!

The Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Beginning

We get to see how everything started for Leatherface in this prequel to "The Texas Chainsaw Massacre." He's working at a meat-packing plant that is about to close down. He snaps and kills the foreman.
Later a car with teens get into an accident and end up at Leatherface's house - and he shows no mercy.
I thought this movie would be a stinker, but boy was I wrong! This movie nailed almost everything: The mood. The look. The acting. The sheer horror.
This movie is much better than you think. This is really a worthy prequel to the original.

Suicide Club

Asian horror with some disturbing scenes; like the opening sequence when a gang of teens join hands and jump in front of a subway train.
The movie is quite original, but very uneven. And the truth behind the wave of suicides is really far fetched. Could have been so much better.

Population 436

A man heads into the remote town of Rockwell Falls to investigate why the population have been exactly 436 for the last 100 years. Soon he unravels the mystery and discovers the dark secret.
A decent low-budget effort that kept me interested despite the slow pace.

Them

This French horror movie (original title is "Ils") surprised me. It was terrifying.
A happy couple live in a house on the outskirts of town. One night they're attacked by unseen intruders.
The movie is based on a true story, and that makes it even more creepy. The entire movie is really one long hide and chase sequence, but it works. Nail biting suspense.
