The Sound Of Salzburg Music

I've dreamed of visiting Salzburg since my first screening of the Sound of Music at the tender age of 9. This was to become an all time favorite movie and more than 2 decades passed before I got the chance to…

Race along the paths at Mirabellplatz gardens, skip across the footbridge over the river Salzach, gaze at the city's church steeples whilst listening to the bells ringing out, walk out on the frozen lake in front of Leopoldskron Palace - the von Trapp residence, dance inside the Pavillion where Leisel and Franz first kissed, peer in through the gates at Frohnburg Palace, ride through the old city in a horse drawn carriage passing the Felsenreitschulewalk - the song festival arena, and march down the aisle of the cathedral in Mondsee where Maria was married.

This was finished off by a sing-a-long with a group of enthusiastic Aussies as Bob's Tours bright yellow minibus dove-tailed through the city traffic.

To those who are unfamiliar with the movie, Salzburg has a great deal to offer. Located between the two mountains Kapuzinerberg and Monchsberg and the River Salzach, Salzburg is a beautiful Austrian city with small alleys, quaint colorful town homes, rich castles and palaces, ornate garden designs, pubs and traditional beer halls, and a staggering number of churches and monasteries.

First established in AD696 when the missionary St. Rubert arrived and founded the Benedictine Monastery of St. Peters, Salzburg was to become a church state ruled by the Archbishop and was soon known as the "Rome of the North". The spiritual leader and Catholic Church possessed great power over the centuries, accumulating much wealth and creating a city of music due to the Archbishop's love of and enthusiasm for the arts.

Salzburg is the home and birthplace of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and his influence is felt keenly throughout Salzburg; his larger than life statue located in Mozartplatz, the Mozart museum, Mozartkuglen the chocolate praline marzipan named after it's most famous son, and its annual Salzburger Festspiele (Festival), which offers a variety of operas, concerts and theatre plays; from classical to contemporary styles.

My first glimpse of the city was the Festung, the 900 year old Fortress of Hohensalzburg that guards the city. No matter where you are in Salzburg, this incredible building looms larger than life. It is considered to be the best-preserved Medieval Fortress throughout Europe and St. Sebastian which is built in the Gothic style, the most impressive church.

With great food, wine, music, chocolate, architecture and proud people, Salzburg is a wonderful city to visit.
