First, if you're suffering from a yeast infection, don't be ashamed or embarrassed. Yeast infections are very common in women, and if you don't hear your friends talking about them, it doesn't mean they haven't experienced them.

See your doctor first

If you think you have a vaginal yeast infection but are not sure, be sure to see your doctor. He or she will perform a vaginal examination to make sure you don't have something else such as Chlamydia or gonorrhea.

If your problem is a yeast infection, the doctor will most likely prescribe an anti-fungal pill or suppository or will suggest an over-the-counter cream or suppository. The treatment might be a singe dose or it might take a week. It is generally best to not have any sexual activities until the yeast infection has been cured.

Anti-fungal creams used for yeast infection treatment include butoconazole (Femstat 3), clotrimazole (Lotrimin) and miconazole (Monistat). One oral medication used to treat yeast infections is fluconazole (Diflucan). However, most doctors prefer suppositories over oral medications as they can cause side effects such as headaches.
