The State of Israel is a country in the Middle East on the eastern edge of the Mediterranean Sea.

Israel is a unique blend of intriguing traditions, religions and nature that makes it one of the worlds most desirable destinations.

Half a billion birds, more than every other place in the world, pass through Israel every fall and spring. Nature protectors try to woo more tourists into the country in order to strengthen their own nature protection lobby.

Eilat, in the far south of Israel on the Red Sea, is always sunny and full of tourists.

Mount Hermon is a tiny ski resort in the far north of the country.

The Dead Sea is packed with minerals that are meant to be really good for you. Youll also find loads of places in the Dead Sea area where you can bathe in healthy mud.

The north of Israel is green and fertile, while the south is very dry. A trip into the desert in the south can be a really powerful experience. You can easily get into the desert from Tel Aviv.

A kibbutz is a rural community in Israel, where members share work and responsibilities. Volunteers can stay in a kibbutz for any amount of time to help out with work ranging from farming, cooking and cleaning to hi tech electronics.

Israels population is made up of Jews who have come here from all over the world. For this reason, Israeli cuisine is diverse and really good. For the best, cheapest food, go to a small restaurant which just has two or three tables out on the pavement. Youll also find western fast food restaurants.

Israel has a large area of desert. More than half of the country is taken up by it, the rest is fertile land. The north sees a Mediterranean climate with hot, dry summers and mild, wet winters. In summer the coast sees muggy mornings but pleasant afternoons and the inland hills see dry and sunny daytime conditions with temperatures dropping at night: winter brings both heavy rain and the odd snow shower. The desert area is obviously very hot but nights are chilly and crisp.

You do not need a visa to enter Israel as a tourist.

If you wish to work in Israel you must first find secure employment in Israel and ask your prospective employer to apply for a work visa for you there.
