Maintaining contact with your professors is important both while you're in school and after you leave. You want to make sure that you always stay in contact with them during classes but after you leave they can provide valuable references. Here's how to keep up during both times.

Keeping Up In School

Get to know your professors while you're in school. Not only are they valuable resources later, but if you end up having trouble in their classes, you will have better luck getting help if they at least know your name. After you receive your syllabi, be sure to copy all the contact information for each professor in some type of electronic document. That way if you lose the syllabus for a class, you can still get in touch with your professors in case of an emergency.

Additionally, you may want to visit your professors every once in a while when you aren't having problems. Professors usually only see students when there are problems, and it's a welcome break to have someone come visit when nothing is wrong.

After You're Out of School

Once you finish your program, you will still want to stay in touch with your professors. If you're looking for a new job or trying to get into a more advanced degree program, they can be valuable references for you. Make sure you keep the electronic document with their contact information so that you can find them later.

Professors love hearing how their classes helped former students. You always have the stories from your professors about how one of their students is succeeding elsewhere. They love these stories. When you have one, let them know. Send them an update when you get a promotion or change to a higher level job. They'll appreciate knowing that they made a difference, and who knows, you might just become that successful student they talk about in every class.

Staying in touch with your professors should never be all about you. Remember that they dedicate their lives to helping students, and they love the success stories. In some way, every time you succeed, so do they. Remember to let them know.
