First it was the park, then it was mall, and now the Internet has become a great place to meet new people. It is one of the few places where people can speak their minds without fear of being judged or ridiculed. A simple pseudonym becomes the perfect mask, people need not be afraid to commit or flirt behind it. Internet romances allow people to efficiently attract a partner and establish a relationship without even ever having seen them. Chat rooms and Internet blogs are great opportunities for people to project themselves and conduct romantic sessions without interruptions. They provide nearly limitless access to other people and provide ample opportunity to "make the move."
Online meeting places work because they remove all the pressure attached to the people's personalities and the importance of the first impression. Very often, people pretend to be who they have always wanted to be and find the partner they have always wanted only to discover that they were pretending as well.
However, with each good opportunity comes a flip side. The Internet, although a great source of knowledge, is also the romping ground of thieves and perverts. People can use the guise of Internet romances to elicit personal information and then use it to harm people. Identity theft has become commonplace in romantic chartrooms, and people are often lead on in the name of love. Very often people, women especially, become the target of obsessive infatuations and end up suffering a lot of humiliation and distress. Also, excessive Internet romance can take away a person's confidence in approaching people outside the virtual world. Internet romance can create monsters that hide behind a chat ID and see the world through digitally tinted glasses.
