Schwarzenegger and Obama Team Up to Combat Energy Crisis
The hot topic of recent years has been climate change and how our fondness for fossil fuels is causing severe damage to our planet, it's in the news and even in the movies; we need to change our ways if we want to have any hope for the future of earth.
The warnings coming from the media may sound grandiose but the idea that we need to change our energy consumption and sources of our energy rings true, if only because at the moment with fossil fuels like gas and oil becoming scarce and costly it is pushing our utility bills up and if companies were to embrace new renewable energy sources then there's a chance that our bills may come down as a sustainable energy source would not be under threat from limited supplies.
One such person pushing for this move to renewable sources is none other than the Republican Governor of California/Terminator Arnold Schwarzenegger. Governor Schwarzenegger has signed an executive order that demands that a third of all energy in California will be as a result of renewable energy sources.
The law in California states that at the moment 20% of energy must come from renewable resources such as wind, water, solar and biomass by 2010. He called this new signing "the most aggressive target in the nation" and has full support from the recent president elect Barack Obama, who has pledged to invest in technologies that can help reduce carbon emissions from the coal industry.
Sceptics have criticised Obama's plans to invest in technologies that are not fully developed to achieve his hope for "cleaner coal" but he is not delusional as he accepts that coal is still a core energy resource but should be utilised less as renewable resources become more prevalent.
With a reduced consumption of coal and other fossil fuels then our limited supplies are going to last longer and the energy companies should be able to bring down gas and electricity prices for the typical homeowner. This is a global concern for many people around the world as places such as India, Japan and Europe have all had concerns over higher costs for electricity and gas in the past year or so.
Here in the UK we have had high utility bills for around a year and any chance that we have of getting cheaper bills would be welcomed by the public as well as the government looking for ways to reduce emissions.
