Basic Facts About Your Home Security

The security of your residence is a key priority for any homeowner. A look at some statistics will show how neglecting security can lead to serious vulnerabilities. For example, research has shown that a house unprotected by a home alarm is six times more likely to experience a break-in. That is quite a significant difference. Note that the majority of insurance companies will offer a discount on your homeowner's policy of around 5% to 25% if you have a home security system in place. There are definitely plenty of good reasons to have a security system installed in your home.

Before you have a home security system set up, however, you should figure out what the needs of your residence are, so you can find the right system to meet them. Are you looking to protect your home when it is not being occupied? Is your major concern over home security at night, when your family is in their beds? Must the security system have to deal will pets or small children? Do you want to install protection in case of fire or other emergencies? These are just a few of the issues that you should consider. On the main, you should go with a home security system that can be easily adapted to your lifestyle.

You should also be aware of your home's vulnerabilities. The obvious entry points are all doors leading to the outside, so wiring them to the alarm system is very necessary. The highest level of security should be concentrated on your front door. According to a study done by Temple University, burglars got in through the front door in 79% of home burglary cases. I would strongly advise you to hook up your first floor windows, front door, and back door to your home alarm system to prevent them from being used as points of entry.

What about your budget? You should try not to stint when it comes to protecting your own home. The safety of your family and your valuable mementos and other possessions are at stake here. I cannot stress enough the importance of having a good home security system. You may be able to get something at a low price, but if you do, make sure it does provide the kind of protection that you require. Otherwise, you should spend a little more to make sure your home security is done right. You may have to pay a monthly fee on top of the installation to ensure that a security company is monitoring your home alarm so it can respond if it is triggered. But I personally believe that to be a necessary factor of home security.
