On a cold night in the winter not many things can provide the comfort and warmth as well as a good down comforter can. If you take good care of your down comforter, it can last you a long time. So how do you take care of a good high quality down comforter and still make sure it was as soft and fluffy as it was when you first wrapped it around you? Actually, you'd be surprised to hear that down comforters don't need that much day to day upkeep expect for maybe some fluffing here and there.

Down comforters need to be fluffed often so that they can remain fluffy. This is also to prevent them from becoming too flat and therefore losing some of their warmth. It is recommended that you fluff them on a daily basis. It is also recommended that you use a duvet to cover them and protect them. If they are protected properly, they don't require cleaning very often. Many manufacturers state that their comforters only be cleaned on a yearly or bi-annually basis. Airing them out from time to time though is a good idea.

When it comes to cleaning or washing your down comforter, it is a good idea to just avoid the hassle and send it to a professional cleaner. This will also ensure that the cleaning is down in a proper manner. Down comforters can be dry cleaned, but usually it is best if they are cleaned with solutions that are designed to clean down comforters. If you opt to clean down comforters yourself, then you should clean it in an oversized commercial front loading washing machine. A home washing machine should not be used to clean down comforters. They are not designed to clean down comforters and can't handle the large load. It could damage not only your down comforter, but also your washing machine.

After the wash process, your clean down comforter should be dried in a large commercial dryer using medium heat. This process will take a long time to dry a down comforter, but the process should not be sped up by using higher heat. This can damage and even burn the down comforter. On medium heat even the machine should be stopped every now and then to ensure that the down comforter is not getting too hot. Do not cut the drying process short either. If you do not dry the down comforter completely before removing it from the dryer, then it can lead to mildew growth inside the down comforter and will then lead to the comforter smelling musty.

If you love your down comforter today, then take good care of it and it will be keeping your warm for many years to come.
