You may be using your skylight for enhancing the overall ambience of your indoor living space or it might be that you are just taking advantage of the benefits of natural warmth and sunlight. Whatever be the case, just make sure that you take proper care of your skylight obviously because it remains exposed to the elements all the time. If you do not take proper care, it would not be long before your skylight starts giving you niggling problems such as leaks and dust. If you were not aware of these factors and if you are already facing such problems, then just read on to know what all you can do keep your skylight in top-running condition.

What exactly causes leaks in a skylight?

Well, there are many factors that can cause your skylight to leak. More often than not it is the faulty installation done by a novice handyman that leads to a leaking skylight. Not following the prescribed procedures and standards while carrying out regular maintenance activities can also lead to leaks in your skylight. Apart from these, there are other reasons as well such as hurricanes, earthquakes, and other extreme conditions that can result in leaks.

Can it just be condensation and not actually a leak?

Well, considering the fact that skylights are generally build to withstand extreme conditions, it is very much possible that the water droplets that are falling from your skylight are just a result of condensation and not actually due to a leak. Condensation occurs naturally when the glass panes of your skylight cool off due to the cold outside weather. Small water particles present in the air inside your home then get converted into droplets, which show up on your skylight's glass panes, giving the impression that your skylight is leaking. Apart from this, condensation can sometimes also occur when due to improper ventilation, small water particles generated by dryers, washing machines, hot baths accumulate and condense on contact with the glass panes.

What are the potential damages?

Well, if it's actually a leak and not condensation, then you might have to bear some unwarranted expenses. Depending on the amount of rain you have in your region and based on the extremity of weather conditions, you can as well choose to ignore your leaking skylight in the short-term. However, in the long-term, you just cannot afford to ignore your leaking roof because if you do so, you might have to bear even more expenses related to the replacement of your wallpaper and carpets. In the worst-case scenario, you might also have to carry out structural repairs to the insides of your house, something that will cost you even more money.

A leaking skylight is often a signal to other bigger problems such as the deteriorating condition of your roof. This is why you should never ignore your leaking skylight and seek professional help as soon as possible. Skylight and roofing experts will get to the root of the problem and will ensure that your house remains protected while you continue to derive the benefits from your skylight. You may as well opt for fixing the leak on your own, but this is not recommended because skylight fixing and repair is a complex job and requires specialized skills that only come with experience. Just search and select the most cost-effective skylight and roofing expert and all your problems will get solved automatically.
