Shopping for Discount Window Treatments

There is a somewhat well kept secret about shopping for window treatments, the internet. Yes, you can even buy blinds, shades, shutters and curtains online and at lower prices than in retail stores.  In general, online retailers have an advantage in that their overhead is substantially lower than traditional brick and mortar stores.  These cost savings get past on to you the online shopper.  You probably already know this.  But, it seems that only a fraction of people take advantage of this reality when it comes to purchasing window treatments.

What are the road blocks?  First, if you are buying custom blinds, shades, etc. you cannot just return them like a pair of running shoes that didn't fit well.  You need to make sure that you know what you want and know how to measure your windows accurately so they fit properly.  By the way, measuring your windows is much, much simpler than you might think and only takes a few minutes, so don't get nervous that this is somehow beyond your grasp.  Secondly, to fully realize the cost savings you will need to install them yourself.  Again, for most people this is very easy.  You need only basic tools and a little time.

I think the toughest part of buying window treatments online is simply deciding what you want from the vast sea of choices.  Fortunately, most online retailers will send you free swatches.  And, I highly recommend making use of this option.  Next, and just like in a retail store, online retailers have sales consultants who will help you choose, answer your questions and generally make the whole process a lot easier.  Truth be told, you would probably have the same trouble choosing no matter where you bought your window treatments.  It is an important decision and one that will impact the look and feel of your room or home.  Personally, I believe that online retailers actually offer more dedicated service than the big retail stores.  If you need to call customer service you get their full attention and they will take the time to help you, even if that phone call lasts for a while.  And online retailers generally carry multiple brands and just about every type of window covering imaginable.

To get the best deal, keep an eye on the sales that online retailers are offering.  Most run specials in the range of 15% off up to as much as 30%.  In general, online retailers run specials around all the major holidays, just like any retailer.  So you can time your purchase around those dates. They also offer free shipping and no taxes, depending on what state you live in.  The only caveat to the free shipping is that oversized window treatments cost more to ship and this must be passed on to the consumer.  What I would do is sign up to receive emails from several of the top online retailers.  That way you will be kept abreast of their best offers.  You can unsubscribe to the email announcements once you have made your choice, if you so choose.

With a little research, elbow grease and some do-it-yourself spirit, you can save money on window treatments by shopping online.  Plus, you save time and money by not having to drive all over town.

To recap, the internet is one of the best places to find discount window treatments.  You can find all the custom window treatments including, blinds, shades, shutters
and drapes you desire at lower prices. - David Brooks
