The Problem With Cell Phone Carriers

In the U.S., the cell phone market is split 90-10 between phones sold through carriers and phones sold directly to consumers. In Asia, approximately 80 percent of cell phones are sold directly to consumers and these phones are UNLOCKED cell phones.

The problem with cell phone carriers is that they don't like UNLOCKED phones. That is the reason for their subsidy when you purchase one of "their" models. Not only do they now control who your phone is going to work with, but they also control what you're going to buy and what services you can use. Carriers typically offer only a fraction of a manufacturer's models. They obviously have something else in mind to get your money. It is difficult for them to sell high end phones at cheap prices because they would need a four year contract from the consumer to cover their cost of the cell phone subsidy. Instead they offer low end phones at super cheap prices.

If you want the latest, greatest phones, with freedom to change carriers, you'll need to look at UNLOCKED cell phones. You will probably be quite surprised at just how cheap phones really are. It kind of makes you wonder about what the heck kind of deal you got from your carrier in the first place.

What's the problem with cell phone carriers? Have you ever tried to get out of your service contract with your carrier? What fun! How about trying to upgrade your cell phone? Not without signing your life away! Have you ever called your carrier for technical assistance? Shoot me!

As more and more cell phone users in the U.S. begin to understand what carriers have been doing to them for years, more people are choosing the freedom of unlocked cell phones and more manufactures are making unlocked cell phones available.

So if you want to see better cell phones sooner in the U.S., forget buying from a carrier. Go straight to the freedom of an UNLOCKED cell phone.
