How to Improve Your Memory

I have a childhood friend who remembers what she had for lunch in the 3rd grade.  I, on the other hand can't seem to remember what I was wearing the day before.  Well, maybe I'm exaggerating a little bit, but it never ceases to amaze me the little details she can recall of moments long gone.  She asks me "Remember that time when....?"  I most always just agree and say yes but sadly, I don't know what she's talking about.

Then there are those lucky few like my uncle who have a trait called photographic memory.  These people can look at a page in any book and remember what they read.

Perhaps that has something to do with the fact that he's a billionaire and CFO of a huge corporation.  He definitely has the brains in the family!  Not all of us can be blessed with a perfect memory, but there are a few things you can do to improve it.

Try convincing yourself that you have a great memory and you will!  Keep your brain active by learning new things like a language or a computer skill.  Play brain teaser games to exercise it by improving its physiological functioning.  Regular aerobic fitness routines will get the oxygen and blood flowing to stimulate the nerve cells in the brain.  Reduce your stress levels by doing yoga, meditating or chatting with friends.  High stress has been linked to memory loss because it damages a hormone in the brain called cortisol.

Give yourself time to focus on something you would like to remember by avoiding distractions and complicated tasks.  Maintain a healthy diet loaded with antioxidants and omega - fatty acids which are found in brain power foods.  Take pictures of places or people you want to remember.  Also, stay organized by keeping certain things in the same places so you will not forget where they were.  If you still find that you are having trouble recalling important things, seek out the advice of another who seems to never forget!
