American Pilots Should Be Tried For Manslaughter

So the American government and other American military officials have admitted that they have a video of the death of a British soldier in Iraq due to friendly fire. This so called "blue on blue" attack led to the death of at least one British soldier and the injury of several others. The aircraft involved were active in a position where friendly forces were moving and yet the message that they were did not seem to filter through.

The Americans refused to allow the distribution of the video but some source, who is as yet nameless, managed to leak the video and the British press have got hold of it. The video therefore is in the public domain and has been viewed on many occasions. It shows quite graphically the friendly forces were fired on by the American planes.

But yet, how could such a situation exist? These planes are multi-million dollar machines with state of the art technology. The British forces were using vehicles which had orange markings on them which designated them as friendly forces. The aircraft operators clearly did not recognize the orange markings as friendly forces and thought they were missiles instead. So not only did communications fall short in terms of the knowledge that the friendly forces were there in the first place, but the actual plane operators were not able to recognize friendly forces at relatively close range. Nor was there any suggestion that the friendly forces were acting in a hostile or aggressive manner. And as such, seeing the American planes, they must have felt that they were not in any danger whatsoever.

Clearly someone is to blame and the American government have a policy of not blaming their own military if they can get away with it. Britain, being allies of America for such a long time and staunch supporters of the American way would not stand for such treatment against their own personnel. The aircraft operators are guilty of manslaughter. They should be tried for such.
