Recovery for Chronic Calorie Slashers - Calorie Slashers Anonymous
We all know that you need to eat less calories than you burn in order to lose weight. But how many of us have "slashed" our calories down to almost nothing in order to force off those additional pounds. In theory, it seems like the perfect solution, but almost everyone knows (from experience) that it is not a long term solution.
The New Year is around the corner and one of the most popular resolutions will be about weight loss. The quick-fix solution most people decide upon is to go on a diet, cut calories way down, and see the pounds melt away. About three weeks later, they may have dropped 6-10 pounds, but in 8 weeks, they're back to the old weight and most have even gained 5-10 pounds (that reminds me, it's time for a snack). Why would cutting calories make you gain weight?
Research indicates that slashing calories causes your metabolic rate to drop. Sometimes with long lasting implications (I don't know how long it can take to correct it, but I've read quite a few cases of it being WAY longer than anything I'm willing to accept) Initially, you may lose a lot of weight through restrictive your food intake. But please remember, your body is a highly advanced & ADAPTIVE organism. If you reduce calories to low, your body will become more efficient at operating on fewer calories, in most cases your "progress" will come to a screeching halt. Drastic calorie reduction can cause you to actually store more fat, and in some cases self-cannibalize (in an emergency your body will use it's own tissue as a source of energy)
So what's the solution? Instead of taking the "calorie slashers" way out. Learn what to eat and how to balance your meals for optimum metabolic benefits. Every cell in the body uses energy from food. Food is a vital part of keeping your metabolism elevated. The key is to understand that your body is really smart and it knows a lot more than we often give it credit for. You need to learn how to work with your bodies natural methods of increasing metabolism and use these processes to be a success!
