Wearing a bikini on the beach means baring areas of our bodies that we usually keep safely under wraps the rest of the year, and this can make some women understandably self-conscious. Thankfully there are a vast array of bikini styles for us to choose from, and we can use these different bikini shapes to flatter our body shapes in a variety of different ways.

One golden rule when it comes to picking bikinis, is that the busier the fabric, the more attention will be drawn to the area. So if there are areas of your body that you wish to conceal rather than accentuate, then avoid wearing bold patterns or prints in these areas.

For women with larger chests, there are styles that will look great as well as giving you the support that you need. Halter top bikinis create a flattering v-shape, while opting for a halter with wide straps will support you in all the right places.

Whether you are tall or petite, there is a bikinin shape to suit you. Bikini shorts tend to shorten legs but can be used to create the curvier impression of wider hips on women who are slim-hipped. Those who want to lengthen the appearance of their legs should look for bikinis that have high-cut bottoms.

Avoid bikinis and swimming costumes that are high on detailing, pattern, ruffles and embellishments as these can all make the body appear larger. For the most slimline appearance, choose a plain and simple one-colour bikini.

Women with larger tummies tend to shy away from bikinis, but there is another bikini-like option out there - the tankini. This vest top/bikini bottom combo is great for showing off your legs and arms, and the vest top helps to slim down the appearance of your stomach.

If you have a pear shaped body then there are things that you can do ensure that attention is drawn to your slimmer upper body rather than your larger bottom half. Opt for a detailed bikini top to draw attention up and pair it with plain and dark bikini bottoms for a more flattering silhouette.

A good tip when on holiday is to take a few styles of bikini with you. This way you can alternate them throughout your holiday and which will help you to avoid unwanted tan lines.
