Sensitive skin is the most fragile and vulnerable of all skin types. Therefore, skin care for sensitive skin becomes a daunting task. Products must be tried and tested because you can never be sure how your skin will react. Most people are not even aware that their skin is sensitive and end up using all the wrong skin care products.

If your skin is easily irritated and has low tolerance for temperature changes, pollution or new skin care products, then be assured that you have sensitive skin. Sensitive skin does not have to be a worry. Let us examine the details of sensitive skin and how to care for it:

What is Sensitive Skin?
Sensitive skin is refers to skin types that are very sensitive to any alteration in their present state. This type of skin type is easily irritated and highly reactive. Sensitive skin can be a result of genetic predisposition or certain environmental factors that influence the skin.

Symptoms of Sensitive Skin
- Any undue tingling or tightening of the skin without any visible signs on the face
- The skin has reactions to cosmetics and other skin care products
- The skin becomes more prone to after effects of shaving, waxing etc.

Consequences of having Sensitive Skin

Sensitive skin is not restricted to just being over reactive, easily irritated and demanding careful attention. In fact, being sensitive can trigger a host of other skin problems too. For example:

- Altered skin - This can be a result of temperature changes, shaving, waxing, medications that you may be taking and even pollution.
- Allergic skin - This is when the skin becomes red, inflamed and itchy all over.
- Atopic skin - This refers to dry skin that's itchy all over and prompts eczema.
- Rosacea - The blood vessels of the face swells up producing a noticeable redness of the skin.

How to take care of Sensitive Skin

- Steer clear of perfumes and other cosmetics that are scented as the scent ingredients might react with the skin
- After cleansing your face, make sure you rinse thoroughly to remove any access oil. Again, the cleanser that you use should be mild and oil free.
- Use moisturizers and sunscreens that are especially formulated for sensitive skin
- Don't wash your face too frequently. This can be a call for excessive dryness. Make sure the water is tepid.
- Restrain from using any exfoliates or scrubs.
- The skin responds differently to different environments. Winter can cause excessive dryness and make the oil glands produce more oil to maintain the moisture level of the skin. Therefore, be sure the skin care products that you use do not contain oil.
- For any breakouts and pimples that you get, use a cleanser or moisture that contains salicylic acid.

How to desensitize sensitive skin
Always use make up that is formulated exclusively for sensitive skin types. Buy oil free products like foundation and blushes. Water-based skin care products don't clog the pores. You can also get an oil-absorbing foundation to keep your skin looking fresh throughout the day. Also, avoid using products that have harsh chemicals.
