Cigarettes are one of the most addictive and destructive, over the counter drugs known to modern man. It's one of the few legal substances available that, when intended as used, kills you. Smokers have over a 90% chance of dieing due to smoking related illnesses. Most rational people know this as a fact, yet many continue to smoke. Some smokers know, deep in their hearts, they want to quit. Others are quite content to keep on puffing because they "think" they enjoy it so much.
Why would seemingly intelligent people continue to smoke, knowing full well the dangers and potential implications of doing so? Well folks, I don't want to disenchant anybody, but it is because they are nicotine addicts. Yes, addicts. Just like alcoholics. Nicotine is a drug and it causes an addiction.
Smoking becomes a part of who and what you are, an ADDICT. It amazes me the number of people who smoke cigarettes who would never smoke a marijuana cigarette. "Oh no, that's drugs, I'd never do drugs!
I'm sorry to say that tobacco and nicotine are drugs, and if you're a smoker, you are also a drug addict. It's as simple as that, you are an addict. The sooner you accept it, the sooner you will be able to get well again and kick those "nasty butts" out of your life. Smoking, like any addiction, especially addictions that involve chemicals, is a sickness.
Fortunately it is a sickness that can be cured. There is help available. Chances are that unless you can lock yourself away for a few weeks, you will need some help to kick the habit. Help can be something as simple as some education, or it may be a prescription for a nicotine replacement delivery system (the patch). Some methods are more effective then others. The reason a person is addicted is two fold. One, they have a physiological response to the nicotine. The very cells of their body desire the nicotine. And two, they have a mental addiction.
Commonly clients report that smoking 'is the only way they relax'. When I hear that, I know that it is a subconscious 'mental' desire. Think about it, nicotine is a stimulant and yet smokers often report being relaxed. The chemical actually causes stress and increases your heart rate, it doesn't cause relaxation. Your mind decided that you relaxed. It would be like taking sleeping pills and saying that it causes you to wake up! People who don't smoke can relax without cigarettes, they read, or exercise or meditate or any number of other things. So we know that people can relax without cigarettes.
By using some fairly common sense approaches we can remove and disconnect the mental drive of wanting to smoke. Deep inside your subconscious you have a made a connection in your past that smoking provides some positive effect. It relaxes you, or helps you to think, etc.
By using hypnosis we are able to change that connection. Hypnosis is the activation of the super concentrated power of your mind. It is a heightened state of physical and mental relaxation (not sleep), which allows the subconscious mind to focus deeply on a suggestion(s).
When in hypnosis you can sit outside your addiction and make a different choice about smoking. You can literally change your mind at its deepest level. Once this is done you will experience a sense of freedom you never thought you could have. Your body may send signals requesting the nicotine that you'll find easy to ignore, and in a few days those signals stop as the new programming takes effect and you no longer require cigarettes to get through your life. You throw away the crouches and can stand on your own. You take back control of your life.
