Are Street Dance Workshops A Good Way To Learn To Dance?

Every now and again a dance workshop or master class will pop up with an expert choreographer or dancer. Are street dance workshops a good way of learning to dance? Better than dance classes?

Street dance workshops are very good because you learn a lot of skills from someone who will be able to dance at a high standard and also teach you how to do it too. Often these will be expert dancers so you can learn things that you couldn't learn from an average dancer.

The thing with dance workshops is that you need to pay a lot of attention in them to get the most out of them. Many times when there is a dance master class what you hear the dance teacher talk about is as valuable as the moves they're teaching.

Getting into their mind, their mentality and their whole thinking behind the dance is what's really worthwhile in these masterclasses. This is possibly even more important than the dance moves they teach.

Street dance is a good style of dance to learn in a workshop. All dance styles require regular practise in order to get good. Street dance is not as technical as many dance styles which is an advantage if you haven't been to many dance classes. You'll probably be able to learn and do many of the moves, and a lot of it will be about learning how to add style and 'flavour' to the moves.

This is why what the dance teacher says is of so much importance. Often they'll have so much style and you can learn how they achieve it if you just pay enough attention to what they're saying when they talk.

As with all dancing, one dance workshop will not usually turn you into an expert over night. That is unless it provides the piece in the jigsaw that you'd been missing up until that point. You'll need to go away and practise what you learn in the workshop and then attend any other dance classes or workshops you can as well.

If your area does not have much street dance in it, then practising what you already know of course will be important. Sometimes it will be necessary to travel outside of your area if you really want to put in the practice so you can get even better.

Don't expect miracles from dance workshops, but go in with an open mind and you'll probably come out with some new moves and better understanding.
