Turning Mattresses?

For years mattresses have been constructed in a way that has required them to be regularly turned in order to maximise their life span and continue to provide the necessary support. These days you will still find mattresses that require regular turning however manufacturers are much more regularly veering towards the non-turnable construction which only require the mattress to be rotated rather than turned

The reason a great deal of mattresses need to be turned is to keep the filling shared evenly across the body of the mattress. Manufacturer's recommendations are that in order to settle the filling, a new mattress should be turned every week. After 2 to 3 months of turning of the mattress, the process can be reduced to once every month or so. Always ask for assistance when turning a large mattress as they can be extremely heavy and difficult to handle. Asking for help is important as if a mattress gets a knock or a bump against another object it can damage the springs inside reducing the support your mattress will provide.

The following is a quick guide to turning your mattress:

1. Start by rotating your mattress at 90 degrees.
2. Slide the mattress so that it is hanging over the foot of your bed.
3. Lift the mattress up at the side nearest to the centre of the bed.
4. Ensure the mattress is supported as it drops towards the head of the bed.
5. Make sure the mattress sits fully on the base of the bed after rotating it.

More recently manufacturers have been researching new methods of mattress construction so that they no longer require turning at all. Modern materials and spring systems prevent the mattress from suffering problems in settlement which older forms of construction could. The fact that these mattresses are non-turnable and will need the occasional rotation at most is especially helpful to those who live alone or have medical issues in lifting heavy objects.
