Sacramento is the capital of California with a population of 457 thousand people. It is the city of more than 40 picture galleries and numerous museums, one of the most attractive and rapidly growing areas of the West.
The city is located north-east of San-Francisco, at the turn of Sacramento river with the other Sacramento Valley rivers, and occupies approximately 137 sq. kilometers.
It is a truly historical city of the American West, founded in 1849 by John A.Sutter, Jr - sun of a Swiss immigrant. During the times of the California gold rush in 1849 Sacramento became the centre for gold-diggers. It is here that in 1863 building of the first USA highway called "Central Pacific Railroad" started. From the end of the 1940 the city's industry started to develop rapidly - at the same time, more and more people were coming here.
In the centre of the capital there is California's State Capitol Building located - government building, surrounded by the Capitol Park which occupies 16 hectare territory. In the beginning, the city was built on the Sacramento River east bank and as the year 1800 passed, there was the first urban structure founded here. Now this is the district of old buildings and factories called the Old Sacramento. Those who want to discover the city's history are advised to visit this state park and an important tourist attraction. All the buildings here are good examples of the 19th-century architecture. There are also numerous memorials and objects of interest such as transcontinental railroad and other transport systems, historic riverboats and old underground that you can observe in the old district. It is notable that to built the city, Sacramentans had to raise it one level higher - they used landfill and turned first floors of the buildings into basements to prevent flooding.
Sacramento boasts of its California State Railroad Museum - the largest railroad museum in the world, featuring a huge diorama that demonstrates a site in the Sierra Nevada (constructed in 1860), and 21 restored locomotives and railroad cars, some of which date back to 1862.
Not far from the city an important establishment is situated - McClellan Air Force Base. In 1963 there was an artificial navigation canal constructed which united Sacramento port with San Francisco harbour and the Pacific Ocean. The state's capital is served by a passenger railroad, two freight railway lines and 4 largest highways. Sacramento International Airport can be found in the north-west of the city while there is also local airport serving private and business flights found in the centre of Sacramento.
Sacramento has its own ballet troupe, a symphony orchestra and several theatres. There are also 80 parks here, the largest of which, William Land Park, occupies a 96-hectare territory and includes golf court and zoo with 450 animal and bird species.
What the city is famous for is its Sacramento Jazz Jubilee - a weekend that gave Sacramento a reputation of the centre for Dixieland jazz. Another important local event is the Sacramento French Film Festival, held every July. Featuring new French releases as well as classics that can rarely be seen on screens, the festival is a truly unique event for those fond of everything French.
