Ocean Wave Energy Generation is Promising; What about a Tsunami or Hurricane Storm Surge?

Several ocean wave electricity generation concepts have been considered over the years and now some of these are coming to reality. In fact both Pelamis Company and Fieldstone Energy Corp have great designs, but can they withstand a direct hit from a Cat Five Hurricane Storm Surge? On the Pelamis design one does indeed have to wonder, although their engineers must have considered this or perhaps they are not planning such infrastructure projects in Hurricane Prone areas?

The Fieldstone Energy concept looks as if it may indeed be able to take on a giant Tsunami or deal with a head on Cat Five Hurricane, Cyclone or Typhoon. Recently our Online Think Tank considered all these powerful forces of nature and the advantages of collecting this energy from the sea and the bonus it might bring during what might otherwise be a catastrophe for other dinosaur type electricity generating power plants.

One online think tank member founder stated; here are some thoughts, thinking out loud on the subject of harvesting or catching the energy from a Tsunami or Hurricane Storm surge.

1.) The seconds between waves screw up the harmonic and mathematic equations, thus the system must go into a "Free Fall" mode upon the first lull as the sea goes out, then adjust its self within its structural integrity limits let's say half way back up.

2.) Storm Surges from Hurricanes on the Saffir-Simpson scale of large Cat IV and Cat V Hurricanes are generally no more than 18-25 feet. But your system must maintain integrity at 35 feet, because you cannot have the power out as the rebuilding begins. It is crucial hat it remain in place

3.) Your system in the event of an 8.5 to 9.5 Earthquake would survive, while all the power plants in the area are wiped out or offline for a month, then the power up would be in an Arc Strategic pattern from the shoreline onto land like dropping a rock in half a pond while the power crews repair the local power lines.

If this system was near a desalination plant, you would be up and running with Water and Power immediately, because the system would be shielded (submerged) or working during the Earthquake or Storm Surge. The disruption in the wave (seconds between peak and trough) would be temporary during the Quake, aftershocks, storm surges or Tsunami

The reason our Online Think Tank is thinking here is that someone posed this question to our group last year:

"Is there a way to capture some of the energy from a Hurricane as it passes by?"

At the time the comment was about Wind Generators. But in reality, the same question could be applied to a ocean wave generating infrastructure and if we changed the system to temporarily dismiss is Ocean Wave Frequency Pattern pre-sets during a storm surge and knew more about the sciences of storm surges or Tsunamis, then we could have sensors predicting this in advance.

Then you could collect the energy to Giant Ion-Lithium Batteries so that even if the Power Lines and system is down, you are back online immediately with your water (desalination combo) and power too. Well, I hope this article propels thought in 2007.
