Brick - DVD Review

An interesting plot where students of a contemporary high school start acting like characters from the 1940s crime files. It looks like a stunt attempted by a fresher but the interesting part is that it makes the movie interesting to watch. Rian Johnson is the debuting director and screenwriter and pours all his passion into Brick. Maybe that's what makes the movie so good. Johnson has taken a deep plunge into the world of grit and crime with a bunch of high school kids. He has risked ridicule in doing so as there are some moments in the movie where he loses his grip and his pitch but you have to admire this young movie maker for his guts.

Joseph Gordon stars as Brendan, the guy with a motive to rescue his girl (Emilie de Ravin) from the drug peddlers. His acting talent is as sensational in this movie as in Mysterious Skin. He meets his girl and finds a scrap of paper in the diary she leaves behind by mistake. The scar of paper has a code written on it, he starts playing detective with the help of his friend, the brain (Matt O'Leary). In his endeavor, he ultimately succeeds in finding the Pin (Lukas Haas), a drug dealer who lives with his mother but doesn't let that affect his business, of course.

Steve Yedlin successfully gives the film a seductive hint of danger that attracts us to this plot. The movie moves on like a dream and end leaving you wanting for more.
