With the economy in shambles, and the future outlook on things getting decidedly more dire by the day, maximizing efficiency at the workplace is a must to survive in these very serious financially crushing times. While once merely a very taxing annoyance on any business owner or manger's day, wasted employee hours can now result in the complete financial ruin of a business, no matter how successful the venture.

Everything from slacking off, to mindlessly surfing the internet, to stealing office supplies takes a tremendous strain on a company's prospects. It's not only frustrating for those in charge, it's draining on their lives and their futures. As companies are forced to make layoffs and cut everything except for the barest of necessities, these once tolerable digressions are now a thing of the past.

Unfortunately, there is little companies can do to ensure they're getting the most out of their employees. Aside from needless micromanaging that does little for employee morale other than significantly lowering it, maximizing a workplace's potential is no simple task.

Surveillance cameras allow mangers and business owners to keep watch over the day's proceedings, and the ability to do it in a discreet and non-evasive manner. It gives total freedom with the ability to view from any computer console, allowing for peace of mind when on vacation or a business trip away from the office.

And with the high tech wizardry now available to the public, these cameras are small and minimally intrusive at the place of work. This encourages employees to always use company time wisely without feeling like there's a manager breathing down their neck at all hours. This not only allows for a more relaxed and comfortable atmosphere, it helps keep productivity at a maximum.

Workplace theft is a very real concern, and surveillance cameras are a way to curb these sorts of occurrences. Alerting employees to the presence of the cameras is an easy way to ensure office supplies and computer equipment stays at the office.

For this reason, it's a good idea to keep the cameras small and tactful, but for employees to know they're being videotaped. Studies have shown this helps keep the office in line without too much overbearing on daily routine.

Employers must be aware of litigation concerns relating to privacy and should do everything thing to minimize this in everyday workplace matters. Surveillance cameras can run afoul of the law when pertaining to the following areas:

- Bathrooms and changing rooms are usually off limits.
- Taping that could somehow reveal medical records is another violation.
- Taping that reveals the private matters of employees is another area that could raise legal concerns.
- Lastly, using the likeness of employees taken from surveillance cameras for commercial purposes is highly illegal.

So while once seen as a luxury, surveillance cameras are now an efficient and effective way of ensuring the smooth operation of one's business. They allow for subtle management and keep employees working their hardest. It could potentially save a modern run business from complete financial ruin.
