Volkswagen has another reason to celebrate especially since its unique 1.4 liter TSI engine was honored with the most prestigious and fiercely competitive International Engine of the Year award for the second year in a row. The TSI was voted by a panel of judges from around the world. The award marks the impressive first year for the engine with over 40,000 TSI-powered vehicles sold throughout Europe.

The TSI system is a remarkable combination of what can be considered as contradictory---high performance and frugal economy---why contradictory? First of all when you say high performance you always expect it to be a gas-guzzler but never a fuel saver but on the case of the TSI system you get performance and fuel economy in one.

The TSI system makes use of a small capacity 1.4 liter, four-cylinder petrol engine that is fitted with both a supercharger and a turbocharger working harmoniously. The former supplied the low down power that allows the 170 PS version equipped on Golf to sprint from 62 mph in only 7.7 seconds while the turbocharger delivers significant performance in the mid-range.

The strength and power of the TSI engine was tested during the Volkswagen cup---producing 230 PS in race trim the 1.4 liter TSI engine that powers the Golf still returns in excess of 30 mpg. In road trim the TSI engine, when applied to the Golf is still capable of producing a combined fuel figure of 38.7 mpg while emitting 174g/km of C02.

The engine has made its debut in the Golf and was also equipped to the Jetta and Touran models. The TSI engine was also made available in 140 PS or 170 PS guises with a choice of six-speed manual or DSG gearboxes.

During the presentation of the award Johnson said, "It's the second year in a row the judges have awarded the TSI engine this top prize - we look forward to future generation TSI technologies that might be in store during the next 12-months."

The International Engine of the Year Awards is organized yearly by UK's largest group of technical car publications. The panel of judges for the said awarding is comprised of an international mix of 61 automotive journalists from 29 different countries.

Volkswagen does not only boast of its powerful engines but is also proud of its top-of-the-line auto parts and accessories that include stylish and durable automobile floor mats which matches the endurance and elegance of VW vehicles.
