Each iPod model has been upgraded numerous times and each revision of the models is called a generation. The first iPod was launched was on 23 October 2001. It had a mechanical scroll wheel and had 5 or 10 GB storage space. The battery would let you listen to 10 hours of music. The second generation of the same model was launched after a year and included 20 GB of storage space and touch sensitive wheel.

The third generation of iPod was available in 2003 and had 10, 15, 20, 30 or 40 GB space and had all touch interfaces and a slimmer case. iTunes 4.1 was also released in the same year. The battery life lasted 8 hours of constant audio usage. The fourth generation had color screen and photo viewing features in it with 60 GB space in addition. This was called the classic range of iPods and had 15 hours of audio battery usage and 5 hours of slide show.

The fifth generation of iPod was upgraded in 2006 and was available in two colors black and white. Even the storage space was increased from 60 GB to 80 GB with larger screen and video playback. This model was fully redesigned with a slimmer case. The 30 GB model has a battery backup of 14 hours for the audio and 2 hours for the video and for 60/80 GB storage models it had 20 hours of audio and almost 3 to 6 hours of video backup.

The sixth generation was launched in Sep 2007 where the storage space was increased from 80 GB to a whopping 160 GB. The look was also changed from white to silver and anodized aluminum front plate with a new interface. This model is called the classic model which has 30 hours of audio and 5 hours of video battery capacity in 60 GB model and in the 160 GB model it has 40 hours of battery backup and 7 hours of video screening.

There have been so many models of iPod and almost every year a new model is launched but it doesn't mean that the older models are not as good as the newer versions; it's just that there is another feature or storage space added to it the latest models.
