Advice Articles - How I translated DVI to HDMI

As a relatively helpless girl, anytime I needed my oil changed, my sink unclogged or a spider killed I would use my networking skills and call my boyfriend. In return I was happy to relinquish control of the remote, which I couldn't quite figure out anyway. When I bought my new TV and began my first ever home theater set up, this was no exception. I wanted to be able to watch Hulu on my new 37". That was possible, right? And I figured I should also be able to play a slide show of my cruise directly from my camera onto my TV, also something I figured might be possible. But that is about where my set up ended: as the simple possibility in my imagination.

I had no idea that the output on my computer was called DVI. Nor did I realize that I couldn't plug my computer up to my TV via USB. In fact, I had several embarrassing revelations about the state of my electronics expertise in front of some well educated (albeit a little nerdy) friends of mine. So I did research, spoke to some very friendly sales representatives, and compiled all the information I could possibly ever need on DVI and HDMI cables. My agonizing process is yours to learn from.

So you want to display what is on your computer onto your shiny new HDTV? Yea, that is a cool feature. The first thing I did was check to see what outputs I had on my computer and what inputs were on my TV. My laptop, like most, has a VGA port and an S-Video port. My TV also had both those ports (including HDMI and component video).

I wanted to get the best quality picture I possibly could by using my digital connect from the DVI output on my laptop. However, there was no DVI input on my TV, only HDMI. After a little online searching I found a site called HDMI-DVICable.com. I discovered that all I needed was an adapter, not even a whole converter! This was great news, but possibly too good to be true. So I called customer support and spoke to a very friendly lady who recommended exactly what I needed. And she was right! Moral of the story? When in doubt, talk to the professionals. I highly recommend www.hdmi-dvicable.com.
