The medical imaging field has been changed forever thanks to technology. The development of ris pacs has allowed hospitals and doctors offices move their medical imaging from bulky films to more cost efficient and easier method. The PACS systems have also begun to revolutionize the treatment of trauma patients in emergency rooms countrywide through providing a quicker diagnosis and treatment plan. Radiology PACS ultimately saves more lives. PACS software consists of computers and networks dedicated to the storage, retrieval, distribution and presentation of images. These medical images are stored in an independent format. The PACS system and mini-pacs are basically a digital image management system which allows the networks inside hospitals to manage the growing number of medical images used for patients. Radiology PACS has three main uses:

- Hard copy replace: The use of PACS software replaces the hard-copy means, such as film, of managing medical images. - Quicker response time: PACS, along with mini-PACS provide faster delivery of medical images, leading to speedier availability of results. - Remote access: PACS and mini-PACS allow doctors and nurses at different physical locations to access the same information simultaneously. With the decreasing price of digital storage, PACS systems provide a cost and space advantage over film archives which can be expensive and take up a lot of room. - Tele-education: The PACS software provides improved learning and training opportunities, both for trainees developing their skills as well as existing radiologists since there is more opportunity to collaborate with colleagues and share their learning's and experiences.

Nurses and clinicians believe the pacs system is revolutionizing the way they provide patient care. The RIS PACS is also liked due to the ease of access through out the entire network, as well as after-hours and weekends between the hospital and consulting radiologists. The implementation of radiology PACS allows for access to images throughout an entire health system so that doctors can discuss impressions and recommendations for treatment, also coming with the ability to send images to qualified specialists not in that particular system, greatly enhancing your quality of care. This kind of digital imaging makes it possible for clinicians to access the right image in the right place. They no longer have to wait for film to be processed and delivered. Now, they are given the ability to access high-resolution images within seconds at their computer monitor. Viewing these same important images no longer depends on finding a specific piece of film.

That same image is also of much better quality than film in a PACS system. It is ready much faster, right there on a computer. The treatment can start sooner because of this.
