Candles, so many options, how do you choose?

The candle industry is a billion dollar industry. It is estimated that 7 out of 10 households use candles for reasons ranging from creating a relaxing atmosphere to enhancing home décor. With the rise in popularity, U.S candle manufacturers now offer thousands of varieties in over 10,000 different scents. So, with so many options, how do you choose?

Well, for starters, candles are made with different types of waxes, all with their own unique properties. Paraffin is the most widely used commercial wax in candle production. Paraffin is an inexpensive, odorless, tasteless petroleum by-product. At some time, you have more than likely purchased a paraffin based candle.

Soy is another popular wax used in candle production. Soy wax is made from hydrogenated soybean oil, is 100% biodegradable and contains no chemical or synthetic fixatives. Soy based candles are generally thought to release fewer toxins into the air and offer a cooler cleaner burn that does not emit black soot. These candles have experienced a rise in popularity due to their slower burn times and strong fragrance.

Beeswax is one of the most expensive candle waxes and with good reason. This wax is secreted in the form of scales by the abdomen of young honey bees. Honey bees use this wax to build honeycomb cells. When the honeycombs are full of honey, beekeepers cut off the wax caps from each honeycomb. Beeswax is naturally sweet scented and has a yellow tone. Like soy wax, beeswax is also known for its cleaner burn.

Gel wax is relatively new to the candle industry. This wax is made up of mineral oil and resin. Gel wax is transparent and has a rubbery like consistency. For this reason, gel candles can be molded into various different shapes and decorated with different types of embeds.

Aside from the many varieties of waxes that candles are available in, the variety of scents is even greater. Scents range from fruit, floral and earthy to relaxing and even edible! One of the most popular scents is vanilla, which is thought to create a relaxing and comforting environment. With so many to choose from it is nearly impossible to choose one favorite!

Whichever type of candle you choose, please make sure to follow proper burning instructions. Here are a few candle burning tips to follow:
- Never keep a candle burning unattended.
- Keep candles out of the reach of children and pets
- Always use the appropriate candle holder
- Do not burn a candle near anything flammable

Candles are great to give as gifts, to add ambiance to a room and to positively enhance our mood and feelings. With so many options available today, there is something ideal for everyone!
