Alternative Inexpensive Fuel Sources for Diesel Engines

Thirteen years ago, when we owned a health food store, an old beat up VW Rabbit, parked in front of our store, and I noticed it had signs and writing on the windows. It said, "This vehicle runs on used vegetable oil". The gentleman came into the store and I had to ask him how that worked. He was evasive and would not go into detail, but said he used oil from a deep fryer of a "Patate Frit"(french fry) stand. Being a diesel owner at the time, my curiousity was aroused.

Shortly after that, having the Internet to do some research, I discovered there are many people running their cars on used vegetable oil. I purchased a book, "From the Fryer to the Fuel Tank" and was able to collect and buy the necessary equipment to put together a system to install on the VW Golf that I was driving. It consists of, a 5 gallon plastic boat tank, ¼" copper flex pipe, radiator hose, 2 solenoid switching valves, clear plastic fuel lines, filter and 2 electrical switches to control the valves.

The main point is to raise the temperature of the vegetable oil to 180F to maintain the proper viscosity, which allows it to combust. So, on September 23rd, 1997, I made my first trip to work, 150 kms return, on WVO (waste vegetable oil). With the system working fine, it was time for a major road trip, 1100 kms round trip on WVO. Driving 120kms per hour with no problem. I had to stop to fill the tank with oil from the containers I brought with me. In total, the car consumed about 13 gallons of oil.

Recycled veggie oil smells like french fries when it burns, and restaurants are more than happy to give all their used oil away as it costs them money to have it removed. With all the different engines that could use this type of system, the opportunity to do something with this recyclable, renewable source is inspiring. The impact that it could have on environment is immense as well.

With over 200,000 kms of driving experience and two diesels that have been converted to run on veggie oil, I have found through trial and error the restaurants with the cleanest oil. Since the exhaust fumes of alternative fuel cars can smell like french fries, next time the scent of greasy fries hits you as you are on the highway, don't look around to see if there is a restaurant close by, check to see if you are following a diesel car!
