South Pacific musical is not what it seems to be. It's neither a complete war story nor a total love story. It's an interwoven tale of two couples who are caught in the web of war wrath and their own prejudices. They are people who want to love and commit, but are held back by their own thoughts that arise out of racism.

The South Pacific Musical Set

Inspired by the terrific work of James A. Michener, South Pacific musical is a depiction of two short stories taken from his book "Tales of the South Pacific." The show was first shown in 1949 at the Majestic Theater. It created waves then! At present, the show is running at Vivian Beamont Theater since April 4, 2008. Even today, it is drawing a huge audience. A movie has also been made from this musical. A concert version of this show was held at the Carnegie Hall in 2005.

The lead pair of the current version of South Pacific musical includes Kellie O'Hara in the role of Nellie, who is a US Navy nurse. She falls in love with Emile de Becque, a plantation owner in the play. The character of Lt. Joe Cable is played by Mathew Morrison. This character falls for a young local Liat. The story is built on the backdrop of World War II.

War affects every aspect of people's lives. It also affects love. So, when both these couples plan to commit and start a new life with each other, it's war that comes in between them. Can the couples overcome the aftereffects of war to commit to each other? How do they deal with racism? These are some questions that will be answered at the Vivian Beamont Theater.
