Your product labels are what identify and distinguish your product from the rest of the pack.  When label printing time comes, do not forget some of the basic principles that can make or break your product labels: materials, requirements, design, and label printing.  Your labels represent you and your products; don't make the costly mistake of skipping steps and cutting corners.

Materials
In what environment will your labels have to survive?  If your labels will be in freezers, outside, or exposed to other extreme elements, make sure to use heavy duty labels.  Plastic labels or heavy stock paper labels are ideal. You must also consider what other information you will be putting on your labels.  Not all materials are created equally, so don't choose label material that may present problems with color images if your label will more than likely have lots of color pictures on it.

Requirements
What elements are required for your labels?  Many retail stores require a bar code, as an example.  You may either have to provide this barcode or leave a space in the label so that the store can put their own bar code on your products.  Nutritional information is another element that many products require as well.  Make sure you know what information must be included before sending off your label printing project.

Design
Do you know how to design a label that will capture your customers' attention?  Little items, such as your logo, go a long way in helping your customers identify your products.  Don't forget Design 101: customers look at pictures, then captions, then headlines, and finally your copy.  Make sure your design and layout follow the simple formula which will not only help your customers identify your products, but engage in and connect with potential new customers.

Label printing
Finally, are you working with a label printing firm that has the right experience?  No matter how intelligent your materials selection, how accurate your requirements, or flawless your design, poor label printing will ruin the entire project.  Make sure to work with a label printing firm that has successfully completed projects that are similar to yours.

You only get one shot to connect with your customers.  The perfect advertising campaign can end disastrously if your customers cannot find your product on the shelves.  Selecting the right materials, knowing what requirements are necessary, using appropriate design, and working with the right label printing firm are the keys to a successful label printing endeavor.
