Sweating is a natural process our bodies go through every single day. It is perfectly normal to sweat, and the amount of sweat which is eliminated through the body will vary in each person. However, there are people who suffer from excessive sweating in the armpits, and this is called Axillary Hyperhidrosis. Affected people usually have sweat literally dripping from their armpits, and they have a constant odor that is usually resistant to all deodorants.

If you are unlucky enough to suffer from this condition, you will often be prevented from wearing certain clothes, as the sweat tends to show through some materials quite a lot. The reason that sufferers of the condition sweat a lot, is because the glands have been over stimulated by the sympathetic nervous system. So, some fabrics are worse to wear than others, for instance, if a woman with this condition wears something that is silk, the sweat will leave very noticeable wet rings under the arms, causing embarrassment and low self esteem.

How Old Are You When You Develop This Condition?

Axillary Hyperhidrosis usually affects you more in your adolescence years, but it can sometimes happen in prior to teen years as well. For children, it can be extremely hard to deal with the condition due to cruel remarks and teasing from other children.

Anxiety can sometimes trigger the condition, so the condition can often intensify whilst you are growing up. The problem can affect a sufferer so much, that they may start to avoid social situations and from their friends and the outside world. Younger people sometimes do not even tell their parents leaving them completely unaware for a long period of time before finally noticing that something is wrong. When a parent knows about this condition, they can take their child to get some professional advice to see if they can sort the problem out.

There are certain treatments that a person can get in order to help with this condition and to control it. Drysol can temporarily help because it clogs the pores. The only problem is, it will not work for long and it can cause an irritation to the skin, and sometimes it can even give a burning sensation, and in that instance it should be discontinued straight away.

Botox injections are also available but these can be expensive as they have to be re injected quite often.

Are There Any Long Lasting Treatments?

Because a lot of the treatments are only a temporary measure, you may want something to help you for a longer period of time in order to control the excessive sweating. The good news is that there is something called an EndoScopic Thoracic Sympathectomy, which will stop the signal of the sympathetic nerve to the sweat glands. The results can stop the sweating from all over the body including the palms, face, the armpits, and even the feet.

The surgery

A highly trained and experienced Thoracic surgeon will need to perform this procedure. The patient will be under general anesthesia whilst having the surgery, and they will be administered by an anesthesiologist. Basically during the surgery, the sympathetic nerves are located and cut out in order to stop the body from producing sweat in a certain area. Some surgeons will use a clamping method in which metal clamps are attached onto the nerve to stop the sweating from a particular section of it. The problem with this technique is the results often have a low success rate.

It will take several days before the patient can return to work or school. This treatment is considered to be very safe and has results for 98% of patients, which is extremely effective. So if you suffer from this condition, do not suffer in silence. It is best to talk to someone and to seek some professional advice.
