Success makers are always self-leaders. You may never have to lead others to achieve the success you want, but you will have to lead yourself. If you can't lead yourself you won't ever be able to achieve success because you'll trip yourself up by: a lack of focus, a lack of direction, or a lack of commitment and drive.

Success makers are very focused. Focus is your ability to stay on task and on track with the things that will get you success even when you don't want to or it gets hard. Focus requires the self-discipline to ignore, delete, or delegate the things that keep you from doing those things that will get you success.

Success makers have a clear direction for where they're headed. Without a clear direction you're easily distracted by the unimportant because you have no way of determining what is most important. You obtain a clear direction from thinking about where you want to be in the long-term, and then laying out the steps that will get you there.

Success makers have commitment and drive. One of the biggest success killers is a lack of commitment. When things get tough on your path to success do you have the commitment, and the drive to stick it out even when things get really tough? When you read the biographies of the people who are recognized as having achieved success a common thread evolves uncovering the fact that each and every person had tremendous commitment and drive to keep making forward progress to achieve the success they had in mind, in spite of seemingly insurmountable obstacles and challenges. If you're willing to throw your hands up and walk away in the face of adversity realize in most cases it's exactly at that point when the means to the end you have in mind surfaces.

No one is born a self-leader, but everyone can become a leader. You can develop self-leadership skills. Identify your strengths and build on those first. Identify any weaknesses that will prevent you from being a success maker, and make a commitment to learning how to overcome those weaknesses. Self-leadership is a fundamental requirement for becoming a success maker.
