Bahia Grass
There are many different types of lawn grass for different types of growing zones. Whether you're starting to buid your lawn or reseeding the lawn, choose the grass best suited to your climate. Warm season grasses, such as Bahia grass, can handle droughts much better than cold season grasses.
Bahia grass has got a tough, coarse texture and flat grass blades. It does adapt easily to a wide range of soil conditions, but it is certainly a warm season grass. This grass spreads slowly by short rhizomes, but once it takes hold it will grow thick and requires only little care. It pushes out the weeds without creating any thatch. And it does need frequent mowing. Bahia grass is very prone to mole crickets, dollar spot, and brown patch. Keep the lawn mower's blades sharp so there are no ragged or any uneven cuts. The popular cultivars of Bahia grass are Pensacola and Wilmington.
Bahia grass is excellent for dry areas, as it is extremely drought tolerant. It tends to grow long roots that reach out to all available soil moisture.
Some older varieties of Bahia grass grow tall very fast, much faster than some popular grasses. The grass may go to seeding while other grass in your lawn is much shorter. Make sure you use grass that all grow at the same speed in your lawn, or you'll have to mow more often than you'd like. The best cutting height for Bahia grass is when it is 2". You should mow Bahia grass when it's just 3" tall.
Bahia grass is also very good for high traffic areas in your lawn. High traffic plot with thinning spots are ripe for weeds to grow. You need to plant durable, traffic resistant grass in these high traffic areas. Bahia grass is a warm season grass which will handle high traffic areas of your lawn.
During hot, dry spells, the kind of weather that Bahia grass can tolerate, it's still a good idea to water the lawn deeply and then leave it alone to absorb the water for several days. This encourages the grass to grow deep into the soil. By watering the lawn to a depth of about 6 inches and then not watering again for several days, you are encouraging the grass roots to develop in the ground, instead of near the surface. Saturating this layer of soil activates deep root growth that protects your lawn during the dry spells.
