Acid reflux is medical condition that occurs when acid from the stomach backs up into the esophagus. It is also commonly referred to as GERD (Gastroesphageal reflux disease) and it has such characterized by signs of a burning sensation in the throat and mouth, throwing up, and more.

Acid reflux also referred to as heart burn, is most often recognized by its warning signs and once you notice these symptoms, it is imperative that you seek medical attention to know for sure if it is a case of acid reflux. But besides that, and because of the nature of this condition, there are several home remedy for acid reflux which can and will manage the condition well enough and perhaps better than prescription drugs. Therefore while antacids will give you an almost immediate relief, there are adverse and long term side effects, as with almost all prescription drugs.

Peppermint is also another powerful remedy which helps with digestion, relieving you of cramps, ulcers and gas. Pineapples, especially its fresh juice, is also a great home remedy for acid reflex because it contains helpful enzymes and bromelain which helps reduce or break down undigested protein in the body, which is one of the of the main causes of GERD. Chamomile tea, Aloe Vera juice- at least the sweetened ones, ginger root, are a few other examples of natural home remedies for acid reflux.

Since acid reflux occurs when gastric juices containing acid travel back from the stomach into the esophagus (food pipe,) a very immediate and effective treatment is to elevate the head of the person immediately it happens, this will work with gravity to push back down the juice into the stomach.

Since one of the root causes of acid reflux is bad eating habits, it is therefore imperative, while you begin any treatment for your acid reflux that you watch what you eat. For, know that once you get this condition, chances are very slim that it will ever leave you. One main cause of acid reflux is spicy foods, which irritate the walls of the esophagus after eating, thereby causing the liquefied food to back up your food pipe. Obesity is another major cause of acid reflux because an enlarged belly can push stomach acids upward, thereby triggering a heart burn.

As discomforting as acid heart burns can be, natural remedies, while they may take longer to do their job, they have a longer lasting and permanent effect and at such should be more a more desirable treatment for the condition.
