Time is always a precious commodity. Once gone, it cannot be recovered back. For those first timers who are going for a cruise, one of the most important things you have to decide is the period of stay on board a cruise ship.

Together with most things in life, if the trip turns out fine, you will find that your time has been well spent and you will most likely be looking forward to the next voyage trip.

However, there could also be cases whereby for whatever reasons the cruise trip could end below your expectation. Under such circumstances, you are not able to leave the ship as and when you like and you will be stuck with the ship till the entire voyage ends.

Hence, deciding the duration of stay on a cruise ship is a delicate one and requires careful considerations.

If you are first timer, I would suggest you opt for a shorter package as you will commit less time. The cost of such packages tends to be lower as well. A short package will usually means a time period of 3 days to 5 days. Introductory packages like the Cunard's QE2 offer a weekend package are targeted at first timer cruisers who wants a taste of what cruising is like.

Of course, if you are quite sure that you are going to have a good time with all the facilities and entertainments on board the cruise ship you have chosen, a 3 to 5 days package may be grossly insufficient. In this case, you may feel comfortable with at least a week package or so. If you are keen to explore further regions like the Panama canals, you may want to even consider signing up for the 30 days or more package.

Ultimately, the time and money is yours to spend. There will always be cruise packages that can meet your needs. But be sure to research carefully the cruise ship that you will be spending your holiday time in.
