Interference

Potential minus Interference = Performance

A book written by Timothy Gallwey in 1974 has become one of the most significant pieces of writing on personal performance today. Works of this nature allow others to grow and develop and enhance the original ideas. In fact I have never personally read this book, but I am aware of a great deal of its content. This is because so many people use it as a reference which I am also doing today.

One of the core concepts the book refers to is around two words;

Potential and Performance.

We can all acknowledge that each one of us possesses some kind of potential, some people use this to great advantage, I would suggest the majority of us are under using our potential or "under performing". I can see it on my school report now; "could do better!" So even in the early stages of our lives we have all seen indicators that meant we could improve our performance. Even the world's top performers are always striving to improve, so how can we be clear about the things that we need to focus on to make the improvements?

In Timothy Galway's book he recognises there is a gap between the words Potential and Performance and the word he uses to describe the gap is Interference. This interference can be recognised as all the "stuff" that's going on in your mind or anything else outside of you that might be distracting you from focusing on what it is you really need to be doing.

This "stuff" can show up in many different ways have a look at just a few of these possibilities;

Your current state (What are you saying to yourself)
Your current physiology
Other people
Emails
Fear
Lack of finance
Poor time management
Poor health
Anger
Guilt………….

It's a great idea to make a list of all the "stuff" that might be getting in your way; then prioritise them and create actions around the ones you would like to remove first, because when you remove the interference you will start moving towards your true potential.

In Paul McKenna's book change your life in seven days he talks about the "power of now". He suggests that while technology continues to surround us we are on the threshold of an enormous leap in our evolution, and he believes that people are about to develop their inner resources calling it the age of "psycho-technology". This will allow people to develop their minds in ways that will "unleash the amazing powers and inner abilities that we are all born with".
I believe that this is true and in 50 years time the development of the human mind will have reached levels that cannot even be considered possible at this time. So why wait? There are fantastic tools and techniques available today and you can choose to believe that personal development is a woolly and vague concept to understand or you can throw yourself into a programme of growth that will bring opportunities and choices almost immediately. So my advice become a pioneer of personal development, get ahead of the field the only result will be the removal of interference and a route to achieving your highest potential.
