There are different types of skateboards that are designed for different styles of skateboarding. The type of skateboarding that is done will determine the type of skateboard needed. Each skateboard has various characteristics including length of the board and speed. Depending on the skill level of the skate boarder and the type of skateboarding to be done, different boards should be used. Skateboards can run from the inexpensive to the very expensive. However, for beginner skateboarders, it is best to get an inexpensive but good quality skateboard to start off with. Once the person has mastered the basics and there is a continued interest, additional skateboards may be purchased and perhaps more money spent on the boards.

Skateboards can be found in a variety of places. Toy stores, department stores, sporting goods stores and specialty skate shops all carry various types of skateboard. You can find these in traditional brick and mortar stores and some can also be found online for convenient shopping. Slalom skateboards are used primarily for those who do slalom racing. The boards are shorter and are more easily maneuverable. As the racer goes through a course of cones, they pick up speed and reach the end of the course. The goal is to get to the end as quickly as possible without knocking over any cones. This takes dexterity and skill and a specialized board.

A long board skateboard is most often used for down hill skating. Long boards are also good for beginner skaters and for recreational skaters. It is not conducive to trick riding but it is often safer because there is more stability on the board which is why it is good for beginners. This is a great way to practice basic balance techniques and to learn the flow of the board. The momentum that is attained is one of the reasons this type of board is good for long distance and down hill racing.

A lot of children want to learn how to do some of the tricks they see on television. This can be accomplished once they have a general feel for the skateboard and are more comfortable with its use. There are several basic tricks that can be done with practice and should be started slowly and under supervision. The shorter boards are better for these types of tricks. Wheels are also important to consider when purchasing a skateboard. Some wheels are designed to be faster than others and should only be used with a skilled skateboarder.
