Scholarship is a form of award for an individual student scholar, for the purpose of furthering their education. Scholarships are awarded to the students based on a range of criteria reflecting the values and purposes of the donor of the award. Scholarships are classified into different groups. On the basis of merit the financial need is not used to determine the recipient. It may be determined by the student's athletic, academic, artistic or any other abilities. The monetary value of the merit scholarship may be negligible, but it may mean to motivate the student and promote the study of the subject.

Certain scholarships as need are financial aid for which the student and families financial situation acts as a primary factor in determining the recipient. Such scholarships cover all or a part of the tuition and may also cover the living costs. In such cases the scholarships require the awardees to be distinguished students. Some scholarships may also require the initial qualification of the applicants to initially qualify by race, religion, or national origin. After going through the process of filtering the applicants based on their ethnicity, and considering additional factors to determine the final recipients.

Scholarships may also be awarded by the specific college or institution to the student who is planning to attend that institution or university. Scholarships may also be awarded for reasons of the student's association with the objectives of the sponsoring organization. Some scholarships may also have a bond requirement. The recipient of the scholarship may be required to work for a particular employer for a specific period of time or else they may be required to repay the value of the support that they had received from the scholarship. When starting to explore scholarship opportunities a student can check in with their guidance counselor which can act as a reliable resource for local scholarships. Many countries have also set up local foundations which are dedicated in giving money in the form of grants to the students and organization in the area. Certain foundations may also offer scholarships for entrepreneurial endeavors. Many labor unions may also offer scholarships for members and their dependent children. Many organizations may also offer scholarships to the students whose background may overlap the field of the organization. Charity organizations may also offer help, especially if the late parents of the student asking for help were the members of the organization.

Certain well established universities may also have funds to finance the studies of extremely talented students for their higher studies. To get the aid the student must be highly eligible or among the nation's best.
