Spirulina is a natural microalgae discovered by French doctor named Dr Clement in 1962. This unicellular blue green microalgae usually grows in salt lakes. Dr Clement found that a particular section of people living in the surrounding areas of Lake Chades in Africa had bodies which were stronger and healthier than other civilized people during that time, though they lived under extremely poor conditions. Probing deeper in the matter Dr Clement found that these people ate a particular kind of algae which floats on the surface of the lake water. Present since inception of this earth, this algae, called the spirulina, is one of the earliest forms of life on earth.

The question that could be bothering you right now, is how spirulina can benefit you and me. This algae form is easily digestible and contains 60 to 70% proteins. While this plant protein in five times easier to digest than meat, it provides all the necessary amino acids which is difficult to find in any plant source. Over and above the rich protein content, spirulina is also a rich source of Vitamin E and B12, iron, calcium, anti-oxidants, minerals, carbohydrates and enzymes. It is rich in phytochemicals like carotenoids and chlorophyll which is known for its blood purification properties. Spirulina is rich in phycocyanin, a blue pigment only found in blue green algae. Several research studies have shown that these ingredients fight cancer growth and strengthens the overall immune system.

Spirulina is good for anemic conditions resulting from poor red blood cell count. This is the result from its Vitamin B12 content, folic acid and chlorophyll. It was considered at one point in time that vitamin B12 could only be found in animal products, till people discovered the goodness and richness of spirulina. Spirulina works effectively in the treatment of stomach cancers with only 2 grams of spirulina per day. This results in a coating of chlorophyll on the stomach wall. Liver disorders, chronic hepatitis and diabetes can also be cured with spirulina.

Spirulina is also considered to be a good source for Gamma Linolenic Acid (GLA). This beneficial fatty acid is not produced by the body, yet has great health benefits for bone and brain functions, body's growth, stimulating hair growth and maintenance of healthy lipid profile.  Spirulina is also considered to have beneficial effects on the mind. People who take this plant nutrition as a vitamin supplement everyday, feel mentally energized with increased clarity and alertness.

Other beneficial properties of spirulina includes physical and mental rejuvenation, increased energy level, reduction of blood cholesterol and acidity. It is also a gentle detoxifying agent which in turn does good for cardiovascular health. The goodness of spirulina is not a new concept. People of Africa and Mexico have been consuming spirulina for decades now. It is also accepted in several countries of the world for its goodness and health benefits.

WHO in 1992, declared that spirulina is a high quality food product rich in iron and protein. It is not only good for adults, even children could also be given spirulina safely.

If you are considering any vitamin or food supplement for yourself and your family, spirulina which is now available in user-friendly packs and formulations, deserve a second look. The goodness of this naturally growing algae is unparalleled and so is its richness in vitamin, mineral, protein and nutrition.
