The movie was not originally a musical, but legendary composer Sir Elton John wrote the music that brought it to stage. This is not John's first composition for stage. He also wrote the music for The Lion King, Aida and Lestat. Lee Hall wrote the book and lyrics along with the original screenplay. Hall has written other plays like Spoonface Steinberg and Cooking with Elvis.

Alvarez has been in dancing productions with the American Ballet Theater like Sleeping Beauty and The Nutcracker. Kowalik has been in dance training since the age of 3. He won the World Irish Dancing Championship at 11, making him the youngest American male to do so. He has performed as Billy with the London cast. Kulish is from San Diego, California and has won ballet and ballroom dancing competitions as well as performed with the American Ballet Theater.
