Kids should be able to enjoy Cinco de Mayo, too. How about making the day even more fun for them with some games to play? Some can even be fun for adults, so invite any adults present to participate.

Split Open the Pinata

Everyone loves to try to break the pinata. Blindfold each participant when it is his or her turn. Slowly spin them around a few times and hand them a bat or broomstick. Point them in the general direction of the pinata and make sure no one gets in the way. Depending on how many people you have lined up to try, you may want to either use a timer or count how many tries each person gets.

The Mexican hat relay is another great game for using up any extra energy. You can pick up a couple sombreros at your local party store or draw a some on sheets of paper. Split everyone who wants to play into two even teams. Set each hat down at the far side of the room. Racing against each other, players must run to the hat, dance around it in a circle three times, and then race back to tag the next person. The first team whose members have all completed the task is deemed the winner.

A scavenger hunt can be fun. Gather some items for the teams to find that are related to Mexico in some way. You could use avocados, dried chili peppers, paper sombreros, and so on. Make sure you have enough of each item for the number of teams you will have. This is a great game for pairing up adults with kids. Write out clues that will give them ideas of where to find each item on the list. The first team back with all the items wins.

Set up a coloring area for the kids. Provide plenty of crayons and coloring pages of Mexican themed pictures. Other fun things to keep kids occupied may include maracas they can play with, colorful ponchos and hats they can dress up in, and music to listen to.

Cinco de Mayo should be fun for everyone. Provide fun party favors for everyone, young and old. Maracas, inexpensive party sombreros or other fun items will keep the party atmosphere alive. Let the music play and encourage everyone to dance if they want.

After all that fun and dancing your guests will need to eat and drink! Have finger foods waiting in the wings for everyone to eat. Put together a few great appetizers like salsa with chips, cheese quesadillas and the all time party favorite, nachos. You cannot beat these favorites when it comes to pleasing your guests.

Cinco de Mayo recipes can just be for fun or you can go authentic. Traditional dishes should include corn, beans, peppers and other staples in the Mexican diet. Keep it simple and enjoy your guests.

Your Cinco de Mayo party is sure to be a hit with all the fun and games. Take time to plan it out so everyone has a grand old time. It will be well worth all the effort once you see the joyful guests heading back home, wishing the party would not come to a close.
