To write a great essay, planning plays a very important role. Without proper planning, the end result cannot be good. That is because ideas will appear to be flying all over the place. The essay will not flow, and the reader will find it hard to follow whatever the writer is trying to say. Here are some tips on how to plan essays.

Take your time.

Many writers make the mistake of rushing to finish the essays and in the process, find that they end up spending more time working on it. That is because when a writer tries too hard to come up with ideas, it leads to a dead end - writer's block. So never be in too much of a hurry to finish your essay. Take your time.

Brainstorm for ideas.

You need to take your time because you need ideas to come to you. At this early stage, it is not necessary to assess whether ideas are good or bad. Simply let them come to you. Sometimes, the best ideas may come when you least expected it.

For example, ideas may rush into your head when you are bathing or in the middle of the night. This is actually quite common. And when they do come, make sure that you have your personal notebook nearby so that you can records all these seemingly random ideas.

You may also wish to discuss the topics with others (joint brainstorming sessions) or conduct your own research to see if you can come up with other original ideas.

Assess and organize your ideas.

When you sit down and write, you now find that you have a boat load of ideas that you can use. Now is the time to assess these ideas and organize them. Note that if you did not go through the steps outlined above, you will face difficulty with your writing. The ideas that you already possess helps with the planning process.

When you are done choosing the ideas that you want to expand on, start thinking about how you want to present your ideas. Ideas can be presented in many different ways. For instance, you may wish to start with a core idea, and then go back to it later in the essay. Or you may wish to leave the core essay in the middle of the essay, and come up with some brilliant introduction to lead the reader into the central theme.

As you probably noticed by now, getting an essay to flow nicely requires proper planning. And planning for an essay involves all three components mentioned above - never be in a hurry, brainstorm for ideas, and organizing these ideas. When this approach is well executed, the essay will be one that has a higher chance of receiving compliments.
