So How is Tap Water Tested for Contamination?

Having read one too many water safety stories I began to wonder how is tap water tested for contamination? As an aside I also just wanted to mention that I'm a firm believer that drinking the purest water I can get is benefiting my well being, as so much of what I have read links water quality to many of the illnesses that affect us today.

It's what drove me initially into switching to buying and drinking bottled mineral water for long while. But, what with the cost of it and a desire to do something personal about cutting back on the amount of garbage we create eg. all those plastic bottles we throw away, I sought an alternative route by using a tap water filter system at home.

So, as a result of my own efforts I now have a more detailed knowledge of what happens to the water supply as it enters my home and how my system treats, cleans and filters it before I use it for drinking or other domestic uses. But, what checks and procedures are there in place to test its quality or suitability before that, as in at my local municipal water plant.

Well, I have uncovered a lot of inconsistencies within the water industry itself, which left me thinking that getting good drinking water is in some cases dependent on where you live. I made a point of contacting my local water plant that was responsible for my drinking supply and asking them that same question, as in how is tap water tested for contamination? Their reply was that they are governed by various laws and codes that are supposed to make them produce a water quality report every year. Such a report is meant to highlight any past or previous problems they might of had with any contaminants.

That was kind of reassuring but then I read elsewhere that some municipal water plants do not always produce a report, or so it seems. If that leaves you scratching your head and thinking what do I do now I know the feeling. That is why I stopped thinking and took personal action in finding a suitable home system that gives me clean, drinking water. So, what's stopping you?
