History Lessons

The sage has told us that you can't know here you are or where you are going until you know where you've been. The sage also tells us that we either learn from history or we are bound to repeat it. Ah so! Now just what has our past been and do we know- can we know for sure? It seems as though we keep rewriting history, so how much of the history that we know is in fact truth?

Part of the historical puzzle has to do with the degree to which you beleive we can tell how old a thing really is. In other words, how much stock do you put in carbon dating? One of the most frequent uses of radiocarbon dating is to estimate the age of organic remains from archaeological sites and it's estimated that it can be a valid process up to about 60,000 years ago.

The technique of radiocarbon dating was developed by Willard Libby in 1949. In 1960, he was awarded the Nobel Prize in chemistry for this work. He first demonstrated the accuracy of radiocarbon dating by accurately measuring the age of wood from an ancient Egyptian royal barge whose age was known from historical documents.

There are numerous other methods now applicable that are more accurate and can go back further in history.

But here are some questions:

1-Was the gold chain found in Morrisonville, Illinois in 1891 in a piece of coal really 275 million years old?
2-Was several pieces of gold thread found in England in 1844 in a quarry really 60 million years old?
3-Was a manufactured nail found in Norhtern England in 1845 really one million years old?
4-Was the sole of a shoe found in Nevada in 1922 really 213 million years old?
5-Was a skeleton found in Colorado in 1967 really 4 million years old?

And then I need to ask myself these three questions (for more than just grins).

1-Were the plagues of Egypt due to the last visitation of Planet X in it's 3,500 year cycle, that's due again in 2012?
2-Was the great flood of 11,000BCE due to the galactic plane srossing every 13,000 years and due again in 2012?
3-Was the massive earth destruction of 8,000BCE due to a polar shift that many say happens every 10,000 years meaning we're due again very soon?

How much history do you know? How much history is true? Are you even interested in history- which just might have the answers to your future?
