The Foam Mattress: What Are You Missing?

The traditional spring mattress and box spring which have been the bedding of choice for hundreds of millions of people for several decades are now facing a serious challenge from a rather surprising quarter: latex foam. The advances in foam densities and structures have led to its use in mattresses which are as comfortable and durable, or even more so, than traditional mattresses and box springs, but cost less.

There is a foam mattress to meet every budget; however, the cheaper foam mattresses will probably not hold up well under constant use. They are, however, great for use in infrequently used guest rooms, and may even have your guests raving after a night or two. Some less expensive foam mattresses are even designed to serve as chairs during the daytime and open out into beds at night. While the novelty is great, you should still aim for the best quality foam mattress you can find without breaking your budget.

Types of Foam Mattresses

A single foam mattress can contain one of several kinds of foam; or it may contain layers of different kinds of foam with its degrees of firmness increasing from top to bottom. One type of foam, latex, has the advantages of being hypoallergenic, durable, and biodegradable; another is a unique visco-elastic memory foam developed by the NASA space program.

NASA's memory foam will shape itself to the bodily contours of those using it, providing full support without pressure points, and return to its "remembered" shape when the weight of the users is removed. An eggcrate foam mattress, on the other hand, is very flexible, and good for use on an electrically-adjustable bed.

One of the biggest selling points of the foam mattress is that it offers perfect support for anyone sleeping on it; partners sharing the same foam mattress will have their separate sides of the bed mold to their contours, and the foam will stabilize in that position so that they are not constantly both rolling toward its middle.

When All You Want Is A Good Night's Sleep

But those who have become the biggest advocates of the foam mattress report that its biggest benefit, by far, is the relief it provides for their aching bones and joints. Not only does the foam mattress eliminate pressure points; it cradles the sleeper in a "foam cocoon" so that the usual need to shift about for a comfortable position is also eliminated.

No more tossing, turning, or pillow punching means that you will have a much better chance for uninterrupted rest. If you can't remember the last time you experienced that on your current mattress, it's been too long!
