Cordless Phones - The Good, The Bad, And The Ugly

Yesterday, while working in the garden, I took a call on my cordless phone. It's not something that many of us even think about. Being tied down while talking on the phone is a thing of the past and some consumers don't even know what a corded phone is.
The convenience of a cordless phone is nice. But there are many downsides to having one. The first is that you have no way of communicating if the electricity goes out. The cordless phone relies on the power, through its base, to be able to make calls. If your electricity goes out, there is no way to even call the power company and let them know you are in the dark.
Cordless phones are basically walkie-talkies. This means the information you speak through them has the potential of winding up on another receiver of some kind. Who hasn't heard the horror story of the call being heard over the baby monitor? It would be bad if personal information got to ears that you were trying to keep it from (secrets always find a way out, though). It would be worse if criminals tapped into your calls to get bank account numbers, pin numbers, social security numbers, or other vital information that would allow them to steal your identity and steal you blind.
The good news is that most cordless phones have been designed to switch frequencies on regular intervals in order to make tapping into the calls more difficult. Even with all of the technological safeties that are built in, I am still very careful what I say over the air ways of a cordless phone.
I have cordless phones in my house that I use every day. I also have a corded phone. Now, no matter what happens, I am never going to be left in the dark again.
